Notebook Requirements

Your notebook is a significant part of your grade. Keeping your science notebook up to date and organized is important and very simple. Listed below are the procedures to use to maintain a neat and orderly science notebook.

A. Preparing your science notebook:
 1. The notebook you choose to use must be a 3-ring binder.
 2. You will need dividers which will easily separate sections by having a tab. Label each divider as follows and put them in your notebook in the correct order.
   --label the first divider
Notes
   --label the second divider
Entries

   --label the third divider Misc.

B.
Organizing your science notebook:
 1st Item: Syllabus
 2nd Item: Notebook Requirements
 3rd Item: Lab Safety Rules
4th Item: Rubric for Lab Write-up
 5th Item: Notes Divider
 6th Item: Entries Divider

 7th item: Misc. Divider

C.
Maintaining your science notebook:

 1. Notes Section: Your will receive notes handouts which are numbered at the top of the page. Put these in the Notes section of your notebook in order. Be sure notes are completely filled in so as to not lose points during a notebook quiz or check. If absent, obtain missing notes from a friend or from the class biology notebook in the student center on the day of your return.
 2.
Entries Section: Label all assignments with name, date, period, entry # and title.
   a) Correct labeling is required, and you may lose points on incorrectly labeled papers. The labels are there to help you stay organized.
   b) When you receive a graded assignment, immediately put it in your notebook according to the entry number. A list of assignments and entries is posted on the wall to help you.

 3.
Missing Items:
   a) If you are missing a syllabus, notebook requirements handout, procedures handout, safety rules handout, or any notes handouts, be sure to obtain a replacement copy as soon as possible to avoid losing points on quizzes and checks.
   b) If you have received a zero for an assignment, you can lose even more points if you do not have it in your notebook. It is best to do the assignment so you have the answers in your notebook in case of a quiz. However, at the very least, be sure to fill out a sheet of paper with the your name, date, period, entry #, and title of the assignment so that you may not lose points in a notebook check.

D. Notebook Quizzes: a list of questions will be given to you, and you must find the answer using you notebook.
 1. If an assignment is missing because you were absent, and five days have not passed since your absence, write
absent as the answer on your quiz. We will verify the absence and exempt the question.
 2. If you are absent, you are expected to obtain any missed notes on the date of your return. If a question about notes is asked, and you were absent the day before and have not filled them in yet, then write
absent as your answer on the quiz. We will verify the absence and exempt the question.
 3. If a quiz question is asked about an assignment you used a crisis coupon for, write
crisis coupon as your answer. We will verify that you used a crisis coupon when we grade your quiz.

E.
Notebook Checks: your notebook will be taken up and checked for completion and organization. When grading notebooks, the following items may be graded:
 1. proper order of sections, notes, assignments, and sponges
 2. correct labeling of assignments

3. dividers are present and labeled
4. notebook is neat (ex: papers have note been torn out and stuffed back in)
5. all entries are present
6. all notes are present and completed
